The design elements in this painting are associated with the Wild Yam a staple food source found in the Utopia region NE of Alice Springs in Central Australia. The Yam is best harvested several months after rainfall when the expressed plant has died off. The edible part is attached to the root system; it is located, dug up and gathered by the woman. Large areas of grounds are excavated to find the yam.
The leaf-like patterns shown in Jeannie’s painting depicts the flowers and leaves of the yam vine curling above the ground.
