The subtle brush strokes throughout Gloria’s painting represents leaves scattered on the ground.
Early in 1994 Gloria had new inspiration for her paintings. Whilst walking around her country with her uncle Harper Morris Tjungarrayi (now deceased) they observed the wonderful movement of patterns that could be seen in the dried leaves that were lying on the ground and moving gently with the breeze. These leaves were from a variety of vegetation that grows in the area. Some were from trees and large shrubs, others from the smaller flowering annuals that flourish after a season of good rain. Gloria explains, “Anyone can see them just lying there on the ground. Some of them are from the trees and some from little bushes. Some of them are bush medicine leaves”.
April 1994 Gloria painted her first ‘Leaves on the Ground’ paintings when living in the Utopia region. Her style then was heavy broad strokes which were scattered much like leaves on the ground across her canvas. Over the years Gloria has refined her painting technique to deliberate even fines strokes moving like leaves in the breeze across her canvas.
